What is muscle testing?
Muscle testing is a way to communicate with our subconscious mind. The basic theory is that the subconscious will respond strong for true or yes answers and weak for no or false answers.
There is much wisdom that can be accessed in communicating with the subconscious mind. In using muscle testing we can determine yes or no answers, discern truth and gain additional insights into our subconscious mind.
What types of questions can I ask?
Yes/No
Yes and no questions are the most common to use, as they are the most easily discernible. However there is really no limit to the questions you can ask. Use your imagination!
Supplements
Here is an example of how I use this method regularly to determine which supplements to use, how many to use, optimal time of day, and how often to use them.
- Is this beneficial for me right now?
- How many?
- How many times per day?
- Morning, Afternoon, or Evening?
- Which of these is best for me?
Charts and tables
Another way muscle testing can be used is in conjunction with a chart or table. Emotion Code by Dr Bradley Nelson does this very elegantly. Below is the chart Dr. Nelson developed.

- Is it in column A? Column B?
- Is it in an Even row? Odd?
- Then test each emotion
This technique can be used with tables and charts of all types!
How is this helpful?
Asking if a person place or thing is beneficial to you at this time is an example of a very helpful use of muscle testing. Can you imagine how much farther along we would be if we only did the things that were highly beneficial for us?
What techniques can be used?
In this section we will explain a handful of different techniques and how to use them. Each person may have a different method that works best for them.
The methods listed below are not the only methods, there are many more ways to muscle test than listed here. I listed these because they are methods I have used extensively, and most people find them easy to learn. Each is useful in different ways.
Try them all and decide which ones are your favorite!
Tips:
A few things to note when learning muscle testing. The most common mistake is using too much force. This isn’t a strength competition. Instead of using significant force, use a gentle but firm pressure. We are looking for the subtle difference between yes and no.
Using as little force possible in testing will assure more accurate results. When just learning you may test with “Show me yes” or “Show me no” to get an idea of what your answers feel like and the threshold between yes and no.
Fist/Elbow

Hold one arm with your elbow at 90 degrees and make a fist. Push down on your fist with the other arm. If you get a strong response it is a yes, if your elbow goes past 90 degrees it is a no.
Sway test
Stand up straight facing forward. Loosen up your body. Ask yourself the question. If you sway forward that indicates yes. If you sway backward that indicates no.
Okay/Finger

Hold one hand in the shape of an OK sign, and with the other hand use your index finger. Place the finger inside the loop of your other index finger and thumb. Ask your question and attempt to slide past and open the loop in the finger and thumb.
One handed

Hold your index finger straight. Place your middle finger on top of the index finger near the first knuckle ready to press down. Ask your question. If your finger holds straight the answer is yes, if it pushes down the answer is no.
Note: This method took the most practice for me to learn. I found that for me this method requires a little more gentle pressure to discern between yes and no. This method quickly become one of my favorites as it enables you to test very quickly and with minimal effort.
Problems?
Are you having issues with muscle testing? Are you getting inconsistent, reversed, or incorrect answers? Not to fret, this is common for many. In this section I’d like to go over some of the techniques that have worked for me in getting accurate answers.
Check Yes/No
If you ask show me yes and test, show me no and test, and get correct answers you may be good to go. I like to check these often to make sure I’m getting accurate answers.
You can check them any time to reassure yourself. If they are showing incorrect, try some of these techniques below.
Minimal Force
The most common mistake which causes incorrect or inaccurate answers is using too much force when testing. What do I mean by that? Well for example if I’m holding my arm much too firm or holding my OK fingers far too forcefully, then its pretty likely I won’t be getting the best answers possible
Note: If you are getting a firm yes when the answer is actually no you are likely using too much force.
So hold your fingers or arm, (depending on which method you are using) with as little force as possible. As I mentioned above, remember that we’re looking for the subtle difference between yes and no, not participating in a Strongman competition.
Practice checking yes/no with different levels of force and you will see the difference. This method resolves most issues.
Thymus Thump
This technique I have found very helpful. I use it when I am clearly getting incorrect answers but confident that it is not an issue with force. For me this usually looks like a bunch of no’s when asking questions that would normally be yes.
The technique is simple. The thymus is a gland near the heart. It secretes many important hormones. It is located just behind the sternum bone. Just a few gentle thumps will stimulate it and get you back on track.
Again, check your yes and no to verify they feel accurate.
Additional thoughts
Used correctly, muscle testing can be extremely helpful in the right situations. It may or may not be appropriate for actual decision making, however it can certainly provide information which makes the decision making process easier.
Generally I would say it provides insight into how you are feeling about something on a deeper level. In that sense there is much to be unlocked by utilizing this skill and working in concert with the power of our subconscious.
